About this event
Weaving is a longstanding tradition practised by First Nations peoples across Australia and around the world. For thousands of years, natural materials sourced from Country have been woven by hand into functional and cultural objects including baskets, mats, nets and dilly bags. Today weaving continues as a way of sharing knowledge, strengthening cultural connection and creating space to slow down, connect and make by hand. Join proud Gamilaroi woman Shareen Griffiths, founder of Gamilaraay Gulay, for a relaxed and hands-on weaving workshop. Shareen will introduce you to the fundamentals of weaving with raffia, sharing her knowledge, techniques and tips as you work towards creating your own woven basket to take home. Throughout the workshop you will learn how to shape and build your basket step by step while developing practical weaving skills. No previous experience is needed. Shareen Griffiths is a proud Gamilaroi woman with strong connections to Toomelah, Boggabilla, Tingha and Inverell in far north inland New South Wales, and is currently living on the Gold Coast. A mother and passionate cultural practitioner, she established Gamilaraay Gulay to share her culture, knowledge and love of weaving with others. A pay-it-forward "Gift a Ticket" option is available at checkout, providing a First Nations participant with free entry to the workshop. Aboriginal Art Co is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and the Australian Government through Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support, with philanthropic support from the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation and Creative Partnerships Australia via the Australian Cultural Fund.

Booking is required through Humanitix. Held in the ground-floor workshop and event space at Aboriginal Art Co Gallery, which is wheelchair accessible and has accessible toilets, with an upstairs gallery as well. Metered street parking is available nearby. No previous weaving experience is needed and all guidance is provided. Refunds are available up to one day before the workshop. Aboriginal Art Co publishes a phone number and an online enquiry form rather than an email address; the Humanitix host-contact function also reaches the organiser.
