About this event
nyilamum song cycles is a First Nations-led concert experience for string quartet and voice, presented by the Australian String Quartet with Dr Lou Bennett AM. The program intertwines ancient stories and celebration of language in Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung and Djab Wurrung with contemporary reflections on land, identity and resilience. It opens with two works by Dr Lou Bennett AM exploring connection between people, music and Country, followed by Paul Stanhope's Dirrari Lament from his collaboration with the Bunuba Community in the Kimberley. The concert culminates in the title work, a collaborative composition by Dr Bennett and Paul Stanhope in which the Quartet becomes the voice of Country. The work has previously been performed at the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam and the Adelaide Festival, winning multiple awards, and this performance marks its Melbourne debut.
