NAIDOC Week Song Writing Workshop with Eskatology

This NAIDOC Week, join us for a culturally grounded music writing and storytelling workshop designed to empower young people to find and express their voice. Held at Mount Barker Community Centre, 3 Dumas Street, the workshop will run over 2 days: Thursday 9th July 10.30am - 12.30pm - Song Writing Friday 10th July 10.30am - 12.30pm - Recording Led by First Nations artist and youth worker Eskatology, this workshop creates a safe and engaging space where participants can explore identity, culture, and lived experience through music. Drawing on the traditions of oral storytelling central to Aboriginal culture the session connects modern hip-hop lyricism with cultural expression, allowing young people to tell their stories in a way that feels authentic and relevant. Participants will be guided through: Understanding rhythm, flow, and basic song structure Writing lyrics that reflect personal identity, culture, and community Exploring themes aligned with NAIDOC Week such as resilience, strength, legacy, and connection Recording or performing their work in a supportive environment The workshop is designed to build confidence, creativity, and cultural pride, while also supporting literacy, communication skills, and emotional expression. It provides an opportunity for both First Nations and non-First Nations participants to engage in meaningful dialogue and learning through music. By the end of the sessions, participants will have created their own piece of writing or song, and those who feel comfortable will be encouraged to share their work, reinforcing a sense of achievement and belonging.
